How to choose your photographer
.

Look at the work, styles vary radically. From the genre in which the vast majority of portrait photographers ascribe to; that of the color soft focus, romantic picture made to look like a painting, to the direct and insightful approach I take to portraiture.

More about Murray Rockowitz and his photography.

I believe in the studio portrait; in its simplicity there are no distractions, the image is strictly about the person(s) in the portrait... On the other hand, I do enjoy and value 'environmental portraiture'; when done in a place that is significant to the subjects of the photograph we gain some context, more visual clues about the subject. I do not believe in taking people to set pretty places, that have no meaning to them. I have a strong commitment to working in B&W for several reasons. A well crafted B&W print of a person appears more 'real' than its color counterpart. Color can be a distraction, done properly a B&W portrait will lead you right to the person, to the expression and nuance of gesture. Secondly, one has much more control of the B&W medium ; with color one is locked into the palette of Fuji or Kodak, or what is considered the norm: B&W is subjective, it is an abstraction, and is thus left to the interpretation of the artist. Finally, B&W is permanent; an archivally finished print will last for hundreds of years (for generations), at this time color can not make this claim.

How long does it take to make a portrait?

For a personal portrait we may work together for an hour or two sometimes more. Not all of this time is in photography, a good amount of time is spent getting to know each other, so that I am able to accurately portray you. For a simple business portrait we may work as little as 20 minutes given time constraints. How old should my baby be before I bring her / him in for a portrait? Sometimes we photograph little tiny infants, my suggestion is to do this with Mom, since at this point in their lives, Mom is it! I find 6mos. - 1 year is a great age, they are sitting on their own, delighted with life a very responsive to the outside world.

What should I wear?

People should decide how they want to be portrayed. It needs to be your statement, I also encourage people to bring at least one change for an option. We can talk more about your specifics.

What about make up?

For most personal portraits, people do their own make up if they use any at all. Use the high end of what you would normally use, no need to go beyond . In addition, particularly for commercial shoots, the studio has a working relationship with the areas best stylists and can offer their services.

Retouching?

This doesn't usually apply to personal portraits, mostly the use of lighting and the B&W medium gives the desired results. Again, a working relationship exists with the best conventional and digital retouchers. Pricing? Depending on clients specific needs, cost will vary, contact us for pricing information and a specific cost proposal for you.
